For comparison, here is an up-to-date application in a style that marked it as "new". Note how many are decorated with contrasting outlines, color gradients, separation rules, and how much of that was "visual noise". When repeated across multiple windows on multiple screens in a high sensory saturation environment with routinely high cognitive loads, much of this "restrained" styling added to detrimental user problems.
